Moved to Mt. Beauty in January, 1997. l started working at Kiewa Valley House, Mt. Beauty,in the April,l worked there for 5 years. Then l was successful in getting a position at Bright Alpine Leisure Group, still being part of Alpine Health. This was my place of employment for 13 years, l had lots of fun and enjoyed the job, working as a team member. l retired in September 2013,  having found l suddenly had some spare time. l decided to become a volunteer as a Community Driver, with Community Accessibility, driving people to their medical appointments. The opportunity came up to be a Presenter on Alpine Radio, for Bright Alpine Leisure Group, thank-you very much to Bill Sutton. At the time it was a good opportunity, l was so glad and happy to be given this opportunity. The Bright Alpine Leisure Group, are a very special group to me, and l still keep in contact with the group. I always enjoy the songs requested, the program is excellent, some weeks they will go with a theme. l have lots of fun on the radio, l sing Happy Birthday on air, l even have been caught singing to a song or two on air, l may have left the microphone on?  So from now on l always check the microphone is switched off? I play all the songs on the list, and if l have time left, l play a song or two,to take us to the next program. I enjoy listening to music, I like Celine Dion, Tina Arena, Anne Murray, Kelly Clarkson,Lee Ann Rimes, Elvis Presley, Delta Goodrem, Debbie Boone, Adele, Jessica Mauboy, Hayley Westenra, Olivia Newton John and many more. I always try my best, trying to keep the program interesting with understanding and keeping in mind how important listening to the radio is for so many people.Taking into consideration the Health and well-being of us all. Music can help us in so many ways, Alpine Radio is a very important Community Communication network providing a very important service.Reaching out to so many people, providing so many great programs, and information with great presenters.  I hope from now on you turn on your radio and listen to this great program,l am sure you will enjoy the program as much as l do,so let's all always look at the Bright Side of Life.

Ian erbacher

Picture
Ian Erbacher or ‘Mr P’ as he is fondly known, has been presenting on Alpine Radio for over 12 years. Born in Tawonga, he is considered a local and has a fan base who regularly phone in and request their favourite songs. Ian loves all music, particularly Aussie and American country music. He presents 'High Country' every Friday and 'Valley Sports' on Saturdays in the summer months. He is cheerful and cheeky with a quirky sense of humour; somehow fishing songs get smuggled into every program. In his words, Bill Sutton “chucked him in the deep end” when he joined Alpine Radio. "No one taught me how to be a radio presenter", he says. He taught himself and now teaches others by throwing them in the deep end too!

Glenn Spencer

Picture
I first fell in love with radio when I was given a crystal set for Christmas, at the age of 11. I loved footy broadcast and especially the cricket on the ABC. I was drawn to radio broadcasts where the presenter was able to put their personality across - most commercial radio stations did not allow this. Deep down I always imagined myself on radio calling footy and presenting the music I love or just talking nonsense. Alpine Radio has given me the opportunity to play music that I love and to talk about my other passion - sport, with 'The Has Beens' and 'Valley Sports'. I find the passion gets stronger with every show and I hope I can continue for many years yet!

Ken Halse

Picture
Ken was born in Broken Hill. He left school when he was 15 years old and left home to undertake a four year electrical and communications training course with the then PMG department.  He left the PMG and commenced work with HSV7 as a television technician in training. He left after eight years having gained the qualifications of AOCP  BCOP TVOCP and commenced with GLOBAL TELEVISION, which was the production division of the O-Ten Network (Channel Ten). Eleven years later Ken retired having achieved the position of Assistant Chief Engineer. Ken's friendly and warm demeanour ensure a great working relationship with the Alpine Radio team. He's not shy about presenting radio and joins Linda and Fay on "Brunch" every fortnight with jokes and frivolity in "Ken's Corner".

Hugh Paton

Comes to Alpine Radio from the Mitta Valley after time with 3RUM Radio Upper Murray, and  before family and farming - 2REM Albury in its Ettamogah days.
Hugh knows his way well amongst the doodads behind the microphone having been a hands on Engineer in Radio development labs Melbourne way in an earlier life, and built 2REM’s first transmitter. Tinkering forever he has a versatile home studio and has used that for street broadcasts & OB’s with 3RUM.
Along Life’s way he became interested in Folk music and played Banjo. The ‘Betty Bushrat’ version of Peter Ward’s Kiewa Valley Song comes from those days & was recorded by Hugh one miserable August afternoon at Peter Wards then pad at Tawonga Sth, and its Hugh pretending to be really competent on the Banjo.
So his on air program ‘The stockpot’ (Presently Thursday afternoon) reflects this interest in Roots music, he has family Beechworth way continuing the music, and close relo’s in Tawonga Sth. It’s always a nice hours drive Mitta Valley up the west side of the Kiewa Valley.

Scottie Graham

Picture
I first started out at Alpine Radio in 2010 helping out around the station on occasions. In 2011 Nick Brown invited me to co-host his Milestones Jazz and Blues show, which I accepted and on the 11th February 2011 I made my first appearance on the Radio. We presented a show on Modern Swing.
From there I co-hosted other shows with Nick, Glen Spencer and Johnny White. I still fill in for these and other presenters. I then joined the committee as an ordinary member in August that year.
It wasn’t until 10th of November 2012 that I started my own show – The Cellar of Sounds which broadcasted from 3 until 6 on a Saturday afternoon.
In 2015 I became President of the station.
In March 2016 I took on the Monday Something Different show, after my close friend Warwick Randall fell ill.
On June the 1st 2016 I was asked to join Linda and Fay on their Wednesday Brunch programme presenting Music trivia.
In October 2016 due to personal reasons I temporarily left the station, but came back in January 2017 presenting Something Different on Monday’s 9 to Noon with the Goons at 11am, the Cellar of Sounds at a new time of Noon till 3 on Sundays, also Music Trivia on Wednesday Brunch.

Helen Mcdougall

Picture
Helen grew up in Sydney and in 1970 went by ship (as you did in those days unless you were rich) to Germany and then London where she lived, worked and travelled for 2 and a half years. Helen Married in 1979 and moved to Melbourne (where her husband Noel was from) until moving to Tawonga South with Noel and their two young daughters in 1987 to run a motel for the next four years.  Whilst she has always been a 'city girl', moving to Mt Beauty was a very positive decision for Helen & Noel and proved to be a wonderful place in which to raise their daughters.  In the early 90's Helen undertook Tertiary Study for the first time and worked in Community Health in Mt Beauty from 1995- 2000.  She achieved her Social Work Degree in 2000 and commenced work in Wodonga and then Albury until she retired in 2013. Volunteering has always been a big part of Helen's life and once retired she was able to volunteer in the local community.  Helen has always been a passionate supporter of Community Radio and was one of the early readers for the Royal Blind Society's (as it was known then) Radio for the Print Handicapped program in Melbourne in the early 80's.  She now presents and reads on RPH on Alpine Radio on Wednesday afternoons and is Co-Host of 'What Are you Reading' on Tuesday evenings.

Fay Mason

Picture
Moved to Mt Beauty in February 2016 after retiring .
Worked in the beauty industry for over 50 years, was general manager of a large importer of perfumes and cosmetics.  Although I did a marketing position and public relations for another company prior to that.
Met Linda Parkinson who asked me to co present the Brunch program with her, which I enjoy immensely.
I don't take things too seriously , although I have a keen interest in current affairs and  politics.
Consider a sense of humour a must.
I love the community here , after living in big cities and travelling, I find the people here are great , very giving and friendly.
My days are spent studying, reading and writing, I love to walk as there are many beautiful places to go, unfortunately I love to cook and eat.
The radio station is a fabulous community effort, the presenters represent a range of people from different walks of life, I love the programs that reflect the personal choices in music (Jazz, Blues, Country & Western, etc).
My hobbies are "creating new recipes" reading, and writing, I'd love to write a comedic  play using the radio station and presenters as a subject and cast.
Wouldn't that be hilarious !!!

Derek hutton

Born in Scotland, raised in Mount Beauty, Derek did his trade with the S.E.C.V (painter-decorator) in 1971/1972. He is a member of the local CFA (50 years), member of Mount Beauty Fishing Club, and the North East Muzzle Loader Club since 1982.  Commenced at Alpine Radio early 2003, when the studio relocated down stairs in the current spot, Derek was the first presenter in the new studio when it was commissioned.  Sunday Night Classics was his program. Growing up with a classical and easy listening music background, the program was mostly this style and influence, sometimes a little change of format to keep people listening.  Currently presenting "Stuff I Like" on Tuesdays at 4pm.

peter rogers

Born and raised in Melbourne. Spent most of his working life in Melbourne.
Peter's working life started as a fitter and turner apprenticeship at the Commonwealth Aircraft and progressed over the years in the engineering trade position at CNC programming as a foreman, production manager and sales manager.
Married in 1973 to a girl from the Kiewa Valley, raising two children and now with 5 grand children (all boys), retiring here in 2010.
My interest in music started in the 50's & 60's era, with my big influences Johnny Cash and a love for country music.
His main interests are listening to one of his favourites from his music, of which he has a collection of over 5000 songs, while enjoying a beer (or two).
In his program 'Valley Country' on a Tuesday Peter likes to play mainly American Country, some 50's & 60's Rock N Roll, Instrumentals and always a little hummer.

nick brown

“I’ve been presenting Milestones Jazz & Blues for 8 years now, since 2009, and it was that desire to present jazz on radio that got me hooked on community radio.  I also present two breakfast programs a week, which I have been doing for several years.  I also enjoy filling in if other presenters are away.  I have been Secretary of Alpine Radio for the last 5 years, and also prepare all the grant requests to help the station come up with innovative and challenging new programs.  I feel it is most important we keep engaging with our local communities across the Shire, for the benefit of those communities and to ensure that Alpine Radio is a vibrant, ongoing part of our ever-changing landscape.”

Past presenters

linda parkinson

Picture
Linda joined the Alpine Radio team in February 2016. Her official role is Station Manager – Administration. Linda produces and presents Brunch on Wednesdays with Fay, her delightful co-host and enjoys bringing local personalities and stories to life on radio.
Before jumping into community broadcasting, Linda followed a career in communications and change management in the corporate sector in Melbourne. She has always been interested in radio and is a devoted listener of ABC local radio and Radio National. Linda and her husband have made Mount Beauty their home with Chloe their Jack Russell and Sammy the cat.
To contact Linda or contribute to 'Brunch' with suggestions, song requests or interviews, email the station or post a comment on Alpine Radio’s Facebook page.

Cheryl Long

Picture
Cheryl has a broad cross-section of experience, having worked in administration, local and state government, childcare, retail, animal welfare, journalism and hospitality.   She had an early start in media, by appearing on The Happy Hammond Show' in the early days of television as a side kick for country and western singer, Stan Stafford.  She worked for Crawford Productions as a script supervisor and a reader for new properties and was taught how to use a computer by Ian Crawford, nephew of legendary Hector Crawford.
She studied media at Rusden, learning art history, documentary making, video and radio production, and went on to write several memoirs while working for the Memoirs Foundation in Melbourne. After working as a journalist and photographer on the Marlin Coast Gazette in Cairns; Cheryl wrote for the Alpine Observer and Alpine Times, as well as the Esperance Express in Western Australia.
People might remember her as owner, editor, journalist, photographer and graphic designer for the Ovens & Kiewa Valley Echo which she started with Narda Cain, above Narda’s shop Star of the Elms in Bright.
Presenting a weekly radio show is a new experience for her and one that she is growing in confidence with.   Naturally gregarious and outgoing, Cheryl is looking forward to gaining more skills so that she can broaden her “You Never Know Show” to include interviews and ‘events’.   “Radio is a bit like cooking,” she has observed, “you have to juggle several different components at once and be very mindful of time management to bring it all together.”
She has a joy of life and a love of music that she is looking forward to sharing with others, and also an interest in politics which might be too dangerous to explore on local radio.

Jocelyn Scherf

Picture
Jocelyn originally took on a volunteer presenters role at Alpine Radio in 2014, presenting 'The Wiggly Woo' a children's radio program- connecting the local community groups and child care and kindergartens to play a range of children's music and interviews.  Falling into radio by chance with a conversation with another presenter about getting my daughter 'Poppy (6yr) to start her own program and from that, Jocelyn has fallen in love with Community Radio.  "It's addictive.  In 2016 the position of Station Manager became available and I thought I would have a crack at it, knowing that i didn't have all the skills, but I had the enthusiasm and took on the challenge."  Since then Jocelyn has been involved in many facets of Alpine Radio from day to day issues to production, script writing, joining up new sponsors, training new presenters, mentoring and school holiday workshops.  In 2016 Jocelyn was nominated as a finalist in the CBAA (Community Broadcasting Association of Australia) 'Volunteer of the Year' Award.  Jocelyn lives in Tawonga has a couple of fluffy dogs, a goat and a mini horse.  She loves spending time with her family and friends.

Brian Littlechild

Brian is particularly interested in voice in radio. He has an hour each Thursday from 9 to 10AM, where examples of quality readings can be heard along with supporting music and comment.  Having studied at the National Theatre, Melbourne, and trained by the ABC in Radio and Television, Brian's background guides him in choosing items of interest be they plays, musicals, book readings or recorded interviews. And Brian also presents Breakfast Radio from 7 to 9AM each Thursday. This is mix of local news, weather, interviews, requests and popular music in the breakfast tradition.
Brian believes that Alpine Radio provides visitors and locals with information that isn't readily available elsewhere. There are events, issues, emergencies and interests in this region that aren't commented on elsewhere. So Alpine Radio can reveal the diverse nature of this area to tourists in their cars, to farmers on their tractors, to drivers on their rounds, and to people in home and in hospital. All can feel connected with the immediacy of voices, interests and accents that are intimate, familiar and friendly. It has a unique and formidable appeal.

Alf thistlewaite

Picture
I’ve been part of the Uniting Church team that presents a program on Alpine radio each Sunday afternoon at five pm called Praise in the Alps. I have presented the program one Sunday per month on a roster system for the past seven years.
The program is a variety of Christian music with a bible reading and reflection during the program. We have a library of programs that are being progressively added to the station's music library.  Historically we have used CD’s though having all the programs on the music library will make it more user friendly.
My preference of Christian music has changed over the years and I have progressively incorporated these preferences into the program.  At some future time I would like to explore doing another program (though not sure what that may look like).
I enjoy the opportunity to learn new skills and presenting a program on Alpine radio continues to be a very enjoyable experience.
